Imphal, July 02 2025:
With an eye on the next Manipur Legislative Assembly election which is due in early 2027, the Democratic People's Front (DPF) today hosted a public convention at GM Hall here today.
As a regional political party, DPF is preparing to fight the next Assembly election in most of the Assembly segments.
The public convention was addressed by many people including retired Government employees.
Kumbi College Principal and SKL Chairman Leichonbam Gopal, DPF president Dr Narengbam Rajivkumar, social activist Ashang Kasar and former DDU Director Dr Raheijuddin Sheikh (Shamu) attended the public convention as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking at the convention, DPF vice-president and Imphal East Zilla Parishad Up-Adhyaksha Paonam Sunder said that there have been several instances of conflicts among the communities in Manipur but the violent crisis which erupted on May 3, 2023 marked a dark chapter in the history of Manipur.
In the aftermath of the May 3, 2023 crisis, many felt the need to work together in order to bring peace and communal harmony, shared co-existence and collective development.
It was this common feeling which gave birth to DPF, Sunder said.
In addition to the sufferings caused by this man-made crisis, the people have been enduring several harsh natural phenomena from time to time, he said.
On the other hand, there is not a single policy for the welfare of educated youth.
In the absence of any comprehensive policy, many youth have fallen prey to intoxicating drugs, leading to several socio-economic issues, he said.
A large number of womenfolk who have been struggling hard to earn a square meal a day are being overburdened with many political and socio-economic issues, Sunder said.
"Our people can no longer move on the National Highways to go to another State; our people are not allowed to inscribe the word "Manipur" on their vehicles while moving within the State and our farmers are not allowed to till their own farmlands.
Given this extremely sorry state of affairs, we, the youth, must not remain silent", he asserted.
During the past 75 years of Manipur's merger with the Indian Union, the Government of India has been either dismissing or putting off indefinitely all the demands raised by the people of Manipur.
Such attitude of the Government of India only breeds more resentment and disappointment, Sunder said.
Fully convinced that all the issues and problems besieging Manipur must be tackled politically, the DPF was set up at the advice of many elders and scholars, he said.
DPF president Narengbam Rajivkumar said that the regional political party was necessitated by the current critical situation of Manipur.
"If we cannot take decisions for our own affairs/ issues, and if we continue to look to outsiders to resolve our problems, it would not be long before Manipur is totally wiped out from the planet", he said.
DPF believes in an inclusive Manipur where all communities can live and thrive together in peace, he said.
Rajivkumar said that DPF will field its candidates in most of the Assembly segments in the next State Assembly election and it is hoping to form the next Government.
The DPF has its doors wide open to everyone who sincerely cares for Manipur even if/she is extremely poor financially, he said.
It's time for the people to help candidates who sincerely care for Manipur with nominal financial donations and elect them instead of taking money from them, he added.
