Imphal, August 13 2023:
BJP MLA Karam Shyam has asked why the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) and other Kuki civil society organisations are not saying anything about the gangrape of a Meitei woman in Churachandpur.
The Langthabal Constituency MLA made the remark after handing out monetary assistance to the family members of three Meiteis who were murdered mercilessly by Kuki militants in the wee hours of August 5 at Kwakta Ward no 8 in Bishnupur district.
Saying that the Meiteis especially womenfolk protested vehemently against the B Phainom incident of May 4 where two Kuki women were paraded naked by a group of people and admitted that the incident had embarrassed all the Meitei people, Karam Shyam continued that some people involved in the incident have already faced the wrath of the Meitei people.
The nude parade case has been handed over to CBI due to immense pressure from the public including Meiteis, he added.
The Kuki CSOs such as ITLF and KIM, however, haven't even condemned the gangrape case of a Meitei woman at Churachandpur on May 3 .
Saying that Kuki CSOs should own up for the gross crime committed by their people against the rape victim, he urged the Government to hand over the case to CBI and take up befitting actions against the rapists.
Justice must be delivered to the Meitei woman who was raped multiple times by Kuki goons while fleeing persecution from Churachandpur, the BJP MLA demanded.
The ITLF, KIM and Kuki CSOs cannot run away by simply saying that they don't know about the horrific crime and must take full responsibility for the torment the victim had to go through, the MLA asserted.
Karam Shyam also interacted with Yumnam Mema, the mother of Yumnam Jiten (46) who was murdered by Kuki militants on August 5, who boldly said that she won't weep over her son's death as many have also died while safeguarding Manipur.
The MLA said that the word of the mother which came up after gathering all her strength despite losing her son still echoes within his heart.
Saying that the simple word of the brave mother emboldens the spirit of many sons and daughters of the State who fight to safeguard Manipur, Karam Shyam said that he decided to meet the mother on Patriots Day to salute her for her bravery.
The MLA also interacted with the family members of father-son duo Yumnam Pishak (67) and his son Premkumar (37) who were murdered by Kuki militants in the most inhumane way by pulling them out of their beds.
The family members of the three deceased are currently taking refuge at a relief camp set up at Terakhongsangbi.
Speaking to the media, Mema, mother of one of the deceased, said that there is nothing more cowardly than to slaughter people during their sleep.
"My son was not the first person murdered by Kuki militants," she said and added that she only hopes to see Manipur intact and peace restored.
