Senapati, August 13 2023:
United Naga Council (UNC) clarified that the Council has disowned the participation of eight Naga legislators who appended their signatures on the memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister on August 9 with the demand to uphold the territorial integrity of Manipur, stating they do not carry collective aspirations and sentiments of Nagas.
In a press release, UNC stated that it is devastated by the untimely move of the eight Naga legislators submitting the representation to the Prime Minister along with 32 others simultaneously on the day of the Naga Peoples Rally organised in Naga dominated hill districts of the state.
UNC termed such signatures as negating the collective sentiments of Naga populace.
It is worth mentioning that the rally was organised under the aegis of UNC demanding the Government of India to exercise its political will to resolve the long drawn Indo-Naga political conflict in the true spirit of the August 3 Framework Agreement signed between the Government of India and NSCN, the UNC statement said.
While the Nagas are all out reiterating for an inclusive, acceptable and honourable solution to the Indo-Naga political issue, submitting representation with some contradictory demands to the Prime Minister is highly uncalled for.
Therefore, UNC as the apex body representing 20 Naga tribes of Manipur feels necessary to place on record that the Naga legislators who have appended their signatures do not carry the collective aspirations and sentiments of Nagas and hence disowned their representation, it added.
