Bishnupur, July 07 2026:
Farmers in Bishnupur have urged the Government to release 2023-24 compensation for crops damaged or lost due to conflict and natural calamities.
The compensation if not released at the earliest may force farmers to launch stringent agitation, the farming community warned during a sit-in organised at Sunusiphai market shed under Moirang Assembly Constituency.
The demonstration was organised under the aegis of COCOMI Farmers' Wing.
During the protest demonstration, the farmers said during 2023-24, hundreds of acres of agricultural land in the fringe areas of the valley were wasted along with standing crops due to frequent attacks by Kuki militants and prevailing tension at the time.
While farmers were already affected by the violent conflict, they also suffered huge losses due to severe hailstorm during the period, they added.
While a chunk of the farmers were compensated for damages incurred during 2023, many are still awaiting compensation, and the compensation for 2024 has not been released yet, said the farmers.
Even as the pending compensation has not been released, the authorities concerned have not completed gathering data of crop loss during 2025.Further, vast tracts of agricultural land in the periphery of the valley are lying idle this year too with farmers unable to tend to them due to prevailing tension, they added.
Due to security reasons, farmers are unable to tend to at least 5,000 acres of fields in Bishnupur district this year.
Farmers are staring at losses worth lakhs of rupees, they said.
COCOMI Farmer Wing convenor Shyam Khuman said many farmers are still not allowed to enter beyond 200 metres in the High Canal area in Bishnupur.
Without timely compensation, the farmers are facing a grim future and potential loss of livelihood, Shyam said.
Denying compensation to the farmers is the same as denying them the right to life, he said, cautioning that farmers may be forced to launch intense agitation if the compensations are not released at the earliest.
Shyam urged the Government to release the compensation amount and allow farmers to tend to their farms without any restriction.
