UCM appeals all to adhere to lockdown call

Imphal, April 01 2020: Reminding the general public about the threat posed by COVID-19, the United Committee Manipur (UCM) has appealed to all the people to understand that the 21 days Nation-wide lockdown is meant to protect humanity and prevent any spread of the virus, no matter how difficult and inconvenient it is.

A statement issued by the secretary general of UCM today praised the clubs and organizations which have been coming to the rescue of people affected by the lockdown, the police personnel who are performing their duties for the welfare of the public, the drivers and transporters who are bringing in goods and essential items, and the doctors, nurse and other health workers who are risking their lives and fighting in the frontline of the deadly pandemic.

The State Government must do what it can to aid and honor these people, the UCM opined.

Stating that WHO and the Governments have been sending out advisories and guidelines for the people to follow in the battle against COVID-10, UCM stressed on the importance of the people to follow these guidelines, reasoning that failure to do so will not only result in a dangerous situation for a single individual but will also present a threat for his or her family and near and dear ones.

UCM continued that in these dire times, there is a critical need for unity among the people and to promote the spirit of helping one another.

There must be many poor people in the State who are silently suffering due to the lockdown and to eliminate this suffering, the State Government must announce a special relief package, the UCM opined.

The committee also urged the Government to ensure that relief materials are provided to the people in need.

Similar to the process done by RBI, UCM also appealed to all the private banks, firms, Marup and tender scheme companies, firms and organizations to announce at least two months moratorium as the people are suffering immensely due to the lock down.

It further urged the landlords in the State to reduce the monthly rent by 50 per cent so as to relieve some of the burden on the people who are already reeling under the weight of the lockdown.

Private firms and other companies must also provide every possible support and salary to their employees.

Lastly, UCM recommended private hospitals of the State to help the Government in establishing more quarantine centres, isolation wards and COVID-19 treatment centres.
