CPI leader calls for enhanced relief measures

CPI general secretary, D Raja who is in Manipur to assess the ground situation has expre-ssed the need to ramp up relief measures in view of the hardships faced by displaced people.
The CPI leader paid a visit to relief camps in Moirang and Churachandpur today along with four other Central leaders including Rajya Sabha MP Binoy Viswam, said CPI Manipur State Council in a statement.
The Central CPI delegation also met with commu- nity leaders of both the affected communities, it said.
After his visit to Moirang and Churachandpur and meeting the community leaders, D Raja had stressed on the need of alleviating the hardships faced by displaced folks, it said.
The CPI leader also expressed regret over the laxity on the part of both the State and the Central Governments despite the fact that the 111 days old ethnic crisis has claimed more than hundred lives and immeasurable properties have been lost, it said.
Civil organisations, women bodies and all sections have been doing their best to help restore peace and normalcy in the State using democratic forms of protests, he noted.
With political parties including CPI and civil bodies pressing for a special/emergency Assembly session, the State Government had earlier recommended a session from August 21.To everyone's dismay, the session did not happen , he said.
The delegation also visited INA Memorial at Moirang and paid tributes to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose before paying homage to the statue of Lamyanba Hijam Irabot at Nambol on their return from Moirang, it said.
They will also confer with 10 like minded political parties in Manipur during their visit and would also attend the 75th foundation day of CPI in Manipur on August 23, it said.
The delegation is also set to call on the Governor, high ranking officials, CSO leaders and intellectuals during their stay in Imphal, it added.
