Erratic power supply hampers normal functioning in Ukhrul

Ukhrul, August 22 2023: Erratic power supply in Ukhrul town over the past few days has been affecting the functioning of machineries and processes which require electricity.

The power outages have caused much inconvenience to the general public owing to the shut down of all internet related services in the offices of Ukhrul District Headquarters for the whole day.

The National Informatics Centre (NIC), Ukhrul was unable to function and was unable to provide internet services to most of the Governmental offices especially the District Hospital, Ukhrul Police and Mini Secretariat office complex.

Speaking in connection with inconveniences caused by the power outage, Medical Superintendent (MS) of Ukhrul District Hospital Dr Reisangmi Raikhan informed that medical equipment powered by electricity were unable to discharge relevant services to the needy patients.

Issuance of birth and death certificates have also been temporarily suspended, he added.

When our correspondent interacted with some of the owners of workshops in the town, they expressed discontentment that the frequent power outages have adversely affected their operations compelling them to set up alternate power back-up facilities.

Meanwhile, Manipur State Power Company Ltd (MSPCL) Officer who is in-charge of Imphal - Ukhrul power line stated the the frequent power cuts in the district is due to power drift citing absence of jungle clearance, high rise trees along high tension power line and incessant rainfall as the main causes of the power drift.

He also mentioned the issue of staff shortage due to the ongoing violence as most non-tribals are unwilling to work in the hilly region owing to security concerns.

'We are working really hard to restore the power supply', he assured.
