Imphal, November 14 2025:
The All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' & Motor Workers' Union (AMRTDMWU) has urged the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to stop engaging in 'petty politics' over highways and upgrade the Nung Dolan bridge to ensure smooth traffic movement along the Imphal-Jiribam road (National Highway-37).Speaking to The Sangai Express, AMRTDMWU secretary Maimom Anil said that some improvements have been observed on National Highway-37 with the upgrading of the Makru, Irang, and Barak bridges to RCC structures, but the Nung Dolan bridge continues to pose a problem for traffic movement.
He alleged that NHIDCL has been engaging in highway politics by imposing restrictions that prohibit the movement of vehicles over 28 tonnes on the Nung Dolan bridge.
Anil also said that construction of a new bridge to replace the existing Nung Dolan bridge had been initiated some time ago, but it was washed away due to alleged negligence by NHIDCL.
NHIDCL has also repeatedly prohibited the movement of transporters along the Imphal-Jiribam road by taking advantage of the dilapidated condition of the Nung Dolan bridge, Anil claimed.
He further claimed that the relevant authorities have not been paying any attention to their demand to address the problem, offering only excuses.
Saying that the working season is relatively short in Manipur, Anil urged NHIDCL to begin construction of the upgraded Nung Dolan bridge.
He said the current time is perfect for project implementation.
Stating that NHIDCL appears to have taken no action so far to address the problems being faced by transporters, he added that NHIDCL must inform the public when construction of the bridge will begin and when it will be completed.
He said that they will not accept further excuses for not constructing the bridge, even on account of weather conditions and directives to carry less weight while transporting goods.
Anil also appealed to the Governor and the Chief Secretary to look into the matter and do the needful to address the problem.
He said that they will not remain silent if the authorities continue to sideline the problem.
