Imphal, June 14 2026:
Nishikant Singh Sapam, MLA of Keishamthong Assembly Constituency, has called for the promotion and preservation of the State's cultural heritage, emphasising the importance of passing it down to future generations.
He made the appeal while attending the opening ceremony of a Khubak Eshei Festival held at Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai as part of the silver jubilee celebration of Sheidamkhol (a Nata Sankirtana school) .
Addressing the function as chief guest, Nishikant said that the identity of Manipur would be lost if its culture is not preserved.
The MLA further said that culture should be closely associated with all forms of business, regardless of how wealthy society becomes or how advanced technology grows.
Reiterating that the cultural heritage passed down by "our ancestors" must be preserved for younger generations, he said that the role being played by Sheidamkhol in promoting Manipur's culture is remarkable.
The MLA noted that he was not very interested in watching Nata Sankirtana or Pala (traditional devotional folk singing) during his younger days, but added that as he grew older, he wishes to see Manipur's religious events performed in their pure and authentic form.
Nishikant said he missed Padma Shri awardee Wareppa Naba, the celebrated Shumang Leela and theatre personality, and dedicated the day's event to him.
He recalled meeting Wareppa Naba during the run-up to the 2022 Assembly elections, describing him as a rare and honest individual.
During the function, Nishikant also distributed certificates and cash awards to the participants of the festival.
Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) Director P Bilash, SP (Crime Against Women and Children) Ph Mahe-shwari and Manipur State Kala Akademi awardee Dr Lamabam Gojendra also attended the programme among others.
