Call to promote handloom, textiles rings loud

Calls to promote the State's handloom and textiles sector reverberated at the ongoing MANITEX 2025.MANITEX 2025 is being held at Urban Haat, Nilakuthi from November 8 and will go on till November 12 .
As a part of the expo being held under the theme "Weaving a Sustainable Future: Manipur's Handloom Heritage to Global Fashion", a discussion programme was held today.
Speaking at the discussion programme, Science & Technology and Art & Culture Secretary Kengoo Zuringla said, "The handloom sector is a core element of our identity and it is the duty of every one of us to promote the same sector" .
It is a matter of pride that MANITEX 2025 has succeeded in showcasing the State's handloom sector at the global stage, she said.
Kengoo Zuringla said that MANITEX provides a platform to showcase the talents and skills of the State's weavers and artisans at the international level.
The expo also gives an opportunity to identify budding talents in the field of handloom and textiles, she said.
She underscored the importance of preserving the traditional skills of dyeing, weaving, embroidery and tailoring.
Handloom and Textiles Director E Jiten said that the Government has been giving subsidies on cotton and silk yams to weavers.
He said that MANITEX 2025 is being held to give a platform for marketing the products made by weavers and artisans of the State at the international level.
Jiten said that Urban Haat, Nilakuthi has permanent stalls which depict the identities of each and every ethnic group.
The Handloom and Textiles Director said that a buyer from Japan has shown interest in a cotton fabric of particular colour and design, he said.
Jiten said that they are trying to identify the particular design and colour desired by the buyer from Japan but the unique pattern of Manipur will be retained.
Cooperative Societies Registrar Waikhom Ibohal, CAU, College of Food Technology, Dean Prof Ng Iboyaima and Mutuwa Museum director Mutuwa Bahadur also took part in the discussion programme.
In the afternoon, a workshop christened "Driving Green Growth: A Workshop on Innovation and Sustainable Production Practices" was held and this was followed by a 'designer talk' on "Interior Design with Manipur Handloom and Handicrafts".
MANITEX Fashion Week and a musical event rounded up the day 3 of the expo.
