Imphal, September 09 2025:
In a major setback for the BJP, several party workers and supporters in Sugnu Assembly Constituency have joined the Congress party.
This move is reportedly in appreciation of the efforts by Sugnu AC MLA K Ranjit to restore peace and rehabilitate internally displaced people, particularly from Serou and Sugnu areas.
The Sugnu Block Congress Committee welcomed 107 households from Kakching Khunou on September 6 and 151 families from Kakching Khunou and Pangaltabi on September 7, who recently joined the Congress party.
Today, another 68 families from Pangaltabi have shifted political allegiance to the Congress party and they were felicitated during a function held at Ima Panthoibi Laibung at Pangaltabi.
Addressing the ceremony, K Ranjit stated that the BJP is the most dishonest party, capable of arguing that black is white.
He also said that BJP is unsuitable for Manipur.
Saying that he won his first election on a BJP ticket, he stated that the June 18, 2001, incident was a turning point, after which he decided never to be associated with the party again.
Saying that a BJP Central leader approached him to contest the 2022 Assembly election on the party's ticket, with a promise of a Cabinet Minister post, the senior Congress leader added that he turned down the offer.
He also alleged that the highly anticipated visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not aimed at resolving the crisis.
The Government extended the Suspension of Operation (SoO) pact with Kuki militant groups on September 4 and on the same day free movement along highways was announced, he said, adding that Meiteis, however, are still unable to traverse along the highways.
Ranjit further stated that on the same day the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement was extended, the Kuki-Zo Council announced that buffer zones would remain in place, yet neither the Prime Minister nor any Central leaders have spoken out against it.
He said that BJP is largely at fault for the crisis besetting Manipur.
Noting that he proposed legislation to protect village volunteers who were forced to take up arms against Kuki armed groups during an Assembly session, he added that the suggestion, however, was ignored.
BJP leaders who claim to love Manipur have actually jeopardized the State and her people, Ranjit asserted.
The Congress party had maintained reserved forest areas during its 15-year tenure, he said, claiming that forest areas greatly shrunk under the Biren Singh-led Government and the same is clearly mentioned in the report of Forest Survey of India.
Ranjit said that he will resign as an MLA if anyone can prove that forest areas didn't shrink during Biren Singh's tenure as the Chief Minister.
Lets uproot the BJP from Manipur, which remained silent even when three innocent children and women, including a toddler, were brutally killed in Jiribam, he appealed.
Ranjit, meanwhile, stated that he will never disregard the trust entrusted on him by the people of his Constituency.
The Congress leader said that he had on different Assembly sessions urged the Government to repair the Wabagai Lamkhai to Sugnu stretch, but the road wasn't repaired due to narrow politics played by the former Chief Minister and BJP candidate of Sugnu AC in the 2022 Assembly election.
He added that preparations are underway to repair the road stretch with a budget allocation of Rs 45 crore from November following his persistent requests to the Governor and the former Chief Secretary.
