Handloom expo ends with focus on IDPs, ethnic artisans

The State Handloom Expo (Hathkargha Mela) , organised by the Manipur Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited (MHHDCL), concluded on Saturday at GM Hall, Imphal, showcasing handloon) and handicraft products crafted by internally displaced persons (IDPs) and various ethnic communities.
Speaking at the closing of the event, MHHDCL general manager (administration) and deputy director of handloom and textiles, Th Basanta, emphasised the need to expand market outreach.
He urged stakeholders to focus on producing items that meet the demands of national and international markets rather than limiting efforts to local buyers.

Basanta said instructions have been issued to cluster development executives and designers to prioritise value addition and product diversification to enhance market appeal and boost demand.
The expo featured a special stalls dedicated to products made by people displaced by the ongoing conflict.
Konthoujam Monika, an IDP from Phougakchao Ikhai currently staying at Moirang Thangjing Sindam Shanglen relief camp, shared her experience of receiving skill training with the help of relief camp volunteers.
She said she was now able to showcase and sell her products at government-organised exhibitions, and expressed happiness that people were showing interest in her work.
"It gives a new sense of hope," she said.
Kabui artisan Martha Pamei also expressed pride that visitors appreciated and purchased indigenous Kabui handloom products.
She said she now aspired to explore larger markets both nationally and internationally.
