Imphal, August 08 2025:
Reflecting on observance of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, Human Rights Initiative (HRI) has called for urgent steps to address the ongoing ethnic violence and human rights abuses in the state, while highlighting this year's theme, "Indigenous Peoples and AI: Defending Rights and Shaping Futures".
HRI, in a statement, said that the day's-focus is on ensuring that indigenous peoples have a voice in shaping the development and use Of artificial intelligence, so they can benefit from technological advances without compromising their rights.
It also stressed the critical role of Indigenous communities in safeguarding biodiversity and the environment.
In Manipur, however, indigenous communities are grappling with a "severe crisis", marked by killings, displacement, destruction of property and deepening social, economic and cultural challenges.
The organisation said that the violence underscores the need for inclusive dialogue and reconciliation to address the root causes of ethnic tensions.
HRI expressed grave concern over human rights abuses, alleging use of excessive force, torture and extrajudicial killings that have left many traumatised.
It said that the rights of indigenous peoples, including self-determination, cultural preservation and equal access to resources, are being violated, and demanded accountability for abuses committed.
Standing in solidarity with the indigenous communities in the state and worldwide, HRI urged authorities to act immediately to halt the violence, protect indigenous rights and initiate reconciliation efforts.
It also called for artificial intelligence solutions to be culturally sensitive and beneficial to Indigenous populations.
"As we celebrate the resilience and strength of indigenous peoples across the globe, we cannot ignore the struggles of our own communities in Manipur," HRI said, adding that peace and stability in the state will depend on justice, dialogue and respect for rights.
