Imphal, June 20 2023:
Federal Students' Organisation Kangleipak (FESOK) has urged both school authorities and the government to waive tuition and transport fees for the period affected by the ethnic crisis, considering the economic hardships faced by people of the state.
Addressing the media at its Naorem Leikai Primary School office, FESOK publicity secretary Jehochand Irengbam emphasised on supporting the people at this critical juncture while pointing out that over the past two months, many individuals have lost their sources of income and opportunities due to the crisis.
Therefore, private schools in the state should consider waiving tuition and transport fees for the said period.
He also contended that the government has made no proper arrangements for the displaced students in-spite of the initiative to resume normal classes.
The government has mentioned about initiatives to admit displaced students in nearby schools, but is unclear whether the measure will be applicable to both government and private schools, the secretary maintained while claiming that there is minimal progress in admission of affected students so far.
Further stating that these students are in need of stationeries, uniforms, and transportation service, Jehochand said as most of the displaced students previously attended private schools there should be a proper mechanism in place to accommodate them if they wish to continue studying in private schools.
Another aspect to consider is that students may have studied under different boards, such as the state board or CBSE.
Therefore, efforts should be made to place them in schools with similar boards.
Additionally, numerous students also require accommodations in different colleges.
Unfortunately, no initiatives have been taken in this regard as of now.
Moreover, many students have lost their qualification documents, which are essential for admission.
Regarding several colleges utilised as relief centres, FESOK urged authorities concerned expedite relevant processes for proper relocation of the displaced people to ensure smooth conduct of classes in all the educational institutions.
