Imphal, June 23 2025:
The Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) on Monday distributed twin bins to 14 Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) as part of a renewed effort to resume household waste segregation in the city.
The distribution ceremony was held at the City Convention Centre, Palace Compound, under the theme "Say No to Mixed Waste for a Clean and Green Environment".
Addressing the event, Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD) director Ng Uttam said that the waste segregation initiative, which had previously been suspended due to certain issues, will officially resume from June 27 .
NGOs currently engaged in waste collection across various localities under IMC's supervision will implement the new system in phases, he said.
Uttam noted that while immediate full-scale implementation may not be possible, NGOs have been encouraged to begin as per their capacity.
The government aims to achieve full saturation of the initiative within the next six to seven months, he said.
Under the plan, waste will be collected in a segregated manner.
Wet, dry, and hazardous waste will be picked up on alternate days.
Wet waste will be converted into compost, dry waste filtered and recycled, and hazardous waste incinerated.
Glass waste will be crushed into fine sand for use in drainage construction.
He urged the public for cooperation in the effort and advised NGOs to consult with local communities to determine collection schedules, fees measures to ensure regular collections.
IMC and MAHUD have not fixed service rates, allowing communities and NGOs to mutually decide on reasonable charges.
