Imphal, August 17 2025:
The People Representation Act, 1951 does not have any provision with regard to political parties hurling abuses and blaming each other.
Instead of playing the blame game, the ruling and opposition parties in Manipur should work in the interest and betterment of the people, Manipur People's Democratic Front (MPDF) has stated.
In a press meet held at Koubru Hall of Manipur Press Club here on Sunday, MPDF president Sapam Samungou said that after the British left Manipur on August 14, 1947, the Manipur State Election Rules, 1948 was framed under Manipur State Constitution Act, 1947 and the polls held in the same year.
Manipur State Congress won 14 seats, Manipur Krisak Sabha five, Socialist Party three, Hills (Independent) 18, Manipur Praja Shanti Sabha (Independent) 12 and one nominee, totalling up to 52 representatives elected to form an independent Manipur government.
The ruling and opposition parties at the time did not understand unity and sincerity and as such, Manipur was merged into India on September 21, 1949 .
Manipur became a Part-C state and attained statehood 8/9 years later.
Even now, the Manipur Land Revenue Act, 1960 has not been effectively implemented in the total 22,327 sqkm area of Manipur.
Instead of taking their responsibilities seriously, the ruling and opposition are focus on slinging mud at each other, he lamented.
Questioning whether the ruling and opposition are misusing the freedom of speech and expression to cause chaos under the guise of the people's interests; Samungou said that other countries' political parties behave differently from the politicians of India and even Manipur.
He continued that had the elected leaders of the 60 assembly segments strived to transform their respective assembly segments to model constituencies, the present conflict would have never occurred.
He then urged the MLAs and MPs of Manipur to focus on growth and development.
