Imphal, August 12 2025:
Fusing with the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, the Library Day organised by Department of Art and Culture at the State Central Library on Tuesday, marked the 133rd birth anniversary of Padmashri Dr SR Ranganathan, widely regarded as the Father of Library Science.
The event began with floral tributes to the photograph of Dr Ranganathan.
Speaking as the chief guest, Art and Culture deputy director Asem Rangina Chanu stressed the need for understanding value and benefits of the State Central Library, urging the attendees to share the knowledge gained from the programme with their families and friends so that the importance of libraries could be more widely appreciated.
According to Rangina Chanu, a proposal to include Library Day in the state's annual calendar has been brought to her attention, which she said needs be discussed with the director to explore the possibilities of making it a calendar event.
Reflecting on changing trends in reading habits, she informed that even as the department is focusing on e-books, reading physical books provides pictographic memory that digital media cannot fully replace.
She stressed the importance of maintaining the habit of reading printed books.
The function, presided over by Manipur Library Association president RK Rameshwar, was also attended by Art and Culture joint director G Dharmadas Sharma as guest of honour.
As part of the programme, reading materials were distributed to internally displaced persons (IDPs) taking shelter at the TAKDO Relief Camp in Thangmeiband.
