Imphal, January 17 2022:
Kalakshetra Manipur observed the 81st birth anniversary of renowned theatre personality late Heisnam Kanhailal at its complex located at Langol Laimanai, Imphal on Monday.
Chorus Repertory Theatre Imphal chairman Ratan Thiyam and Kalakshetra Manipur president Wangkhem Gokulchandra attended the event as chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Ratan Thiyam noted that Manipur is home to many renowned personalities in different fields but not many have respect for such personalities.
There is a tradition of honouring renowned personalities in theatre, film, teaching and other professions including erecting statues in different parts of the world but there are no such traditions in the state, he said.
He further said that most of the parents do not want their children to choose theatre and art as a career option.
In developed areas, parents pay special focus and support their children in their area of interest so that they could excel in" those fields.
Being remembered by the future generations even after death is the ultimate success of one's life and Kanhailal was one such person, who will be remembered forever for his contribution in theatre, Ratan Thiyam added.
A bust of Heisnam Kanhailal was unveiled on the occasion and 'Ima Sabitri', a book written by national award-winning writer Yumnam Rajendra was also released.
Later, in continuation of the birth anniversary observance, a play titled 'Tamnalai' written and directed by late Heisnam Kanhailal was staged at the auditorium of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy.
On Tuesday, another play titled 'Ima Nangi Natambakta' written, designed, directed and music composed by Heisnam Tomba will be presented at the same venue.
