Imphal, January 17 2022:
Manipur State Council, Communist Party of India (MSC/CPI) is gearing up to celebrate Manipur Statehood Day from January 21, 2022 to January 21, 2023 for a whole year, to mark the 50th anniversary since Manipur attained statehood.
In a statement, Manipur State Council, Communist Party of India recalled the Party's contribution in this long journey towards attaining statehood.
MSC/CPI, which had originally emerged as an underground organisation, relentlessly fought for statehood when Manipur was a mere district in the state of Assam, the statement informed.
Attaining the status of a Union Territory did not appease the Party, whose dream was to see Manipur be brought to the status of a state and be treated equally like the rest of the Indian states.
The Party members launched various forms of democratic protests to achieve their goal and many members were arrested and imprisoned at Palel Jail.
Finally on January 21, 1972, Manipur was awarded statehood, the statement added.
The statement further said that the Party will continue to demand and fight for economic packages and for Manipur to be included in the special state category.
