Imphal, March 25 2025:
Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) recently handled a unique and challenging medical case involving a 33-year-old woman from Langol Relief Camp, Imphal West.
On March 10, the woman was rushed to the hospital's Emergency Department with severe abdominal pain after accidentally swallowing a toothbrush while trying to dislodge a fish bone.
According to a release by SHRI AGM & business development manager Premjit Lourembam, general and laparoscopic surgeon Dr Chandragupta Chongtham led the medical team through this unusual case.
After the patient arrived, the team conducted an initial evaluation, including a chest X-ray, but the foreign object was not immediately visible.
On the same day, an attempt was made to remove the toothbrush endoscopically under local anaesthesia.
However, due to its smooth, elongated shape, the toothbrush proved difficult to grasp with standard forceps, making the procedure challenging.
On March 11, the team decided to proceed with a more invasive approach under general anaesthesia.
Dr Chandragupta and his team successfully removed the toothbrush from the patient s stomach via endoscopy.
Prior to the procedure, the possibility of having to switch to laparoscopic or even open surgery was discussed with the patient and her family, and they gave their informed consent in case the endoscopic method did not work.
Thankfully, the procedure was completed smoothly, and there were no complications, sparing the patient from further surgery.
She remained stable throughout the recovery process and was discharged in good health later that same day.
Dr Chandragupta explained: "This case was a rare and technically demanding challenge because of the-toothbrush's shape.
Our team's careful and coordinated efforts were key to the successful outcome".
This case highlights Shija Hospitals & Research Institute's expertise in managing complex medical challenges with skill and precision.
