Meet brainstorms garbage menace in Ukhrul town

Against the backdrop of the growing garbage men ace in Ukhrul town, a public awareness programme was held on Friday at town hall to brainstorm possible ways and solution to the issue.
The programme was or ganised by Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL) and sponsored by the Directorate of Envi ronment & Climate Change.
Manipur with the support of the district administration Ukhrul and CSOs, NGOs and well-wishers.
Attending the event as chief host, Ukhrul deputy commissioner Zuringla Ken-goo lauded all groups work ing on environment issues and garbage management and urged them not to get disheartened by any obstacles that may come in their way of working.
Expressing concern over haphazard dumping of waste, she stressed on the need for segregation of waste at source.
"This is of prime concern and awareness needs to be created on segregating waste on the basis of biodegradable and non-biodegradable,'' she said.
Maintaining that most garbage in the town is produced by those in commercial areas, Zuringla urged the residents to have their respective waste bins ready in their respective places so as to minimise littering in the town.
She also urged the public members to do their mite in mitigating the garbage issue, stating that it is everyone's responsibility, and duty to keep the environment neat and clean.
DC Ukhrul then called for focus on the principles of Waste to Wealth' with everyone joining hands to address the trash issue in a sustained manner.
In her welcome address, TSL president Thingreiphy Lungharwoshi highlighted that the event was organised in view of the growing garbage menace posing health hazard to the public in the town.
"Our main motive for organising the programme is to make Ukhrul town Khan-gachanna Apam' (a desirable place) which is our theme today,'' she said.
TSL president also conveyed that waste management is not just the responsibility of Autonomous District Council (ADC) Ukhrul, but of all and called for encouraging reuse and recycle of things and to discard the use-and-throw culture.
Speaking at the event, ADC Ukhrul CEO David Kashungnao informed that garbage collection service by the Small Town Committee (STC) in the town would be resumed by the end of next week.
He also spelt out a few rules to be followed by the public including that they should not include certain items like glass bottles, broken glass, food leftovers, etc.
David also called for segre -gation of waste at source and dumping at designated sites, warning that anyone failing to comply with these simple rules would be penalised.
Sharing similar concerns, PHED, Ukhrul EE Themre-ishang Marei, SP Ukhrul Ningshem Vashum and CMO Dr Kapangring also chipped in with their suggestions to address the issue.
Later, DC Kengoo inaugurated a plastic bottle waste bin at the mini-secretariat campus.
The event was attended by representatives from CSOs, departmental staffers, church elders, leaders of localities and well-wishers.
