Imphal, April 26 2026:
The students' front of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity has strongly condemned an "assault" on one of the committee's members amid the public rally taken out yesterday to submit a 7-point memorandum to the Chief Minister.
COCOMI did nothing wrong during the rally yesterday.
But unfortunately, one of its members was physically assaulted in an attempt by some vested interest persons to derail the public rally and malign the image of the committee, said COCOMI Students Front convenor Lukram Malangba, speaking to reporters at the committee's office at Lamphelpat today.
The assault took place at Khwairamband Keithel amid the rally.
The assault is condemned in the strongest terms, Malangba said.
The COCOMI member who was physically assaulted by a mob has been identified as Mayengbam Somorjit, a former president of Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) .
After the incident, he was rushed to Raj Medicity, Imphal for treatment.
The mob who assaulted the member was misled and incited by some vested interest persons.
COCOMI students front is looking into the incident to identify the persons who are "traitors among Meiteis" and take appropriate actions, Malangba said.
The COCOMI student front convenor further asserted that such attempts to derail a public movement have occurred in the past.
Khwairamband Ima Keithel is a historic place associated with all major public movements in the State.
"While the mothers of the Keithel have been taking part and leading in all major issues, on many occasions, a group of women impersonating as mothers of the Keithel have tried to dilute and derail public movements.
If such forces are not identified and driven out, the scared Keithel will someday fall in their hands," Malangba said.
He said the COCOMI members did nothing wrong during the rally yesterday which saw massive public participation from all corners of Imphal.
As promised, COCOMI did submit its memorandum raising seven critical questions to the Government, but did not meet with the Chief Minister.
However, the persons trying to derail the movement, as they had already planned, misled the public into thinking that COCOMI members had met with the Government and they had vanished after receiving a bribe, Malangba said.
The attempt was to malign COCOMI's image and undermine the unity and shared strength of the Meitei community.
Such "traitors" who misled the public and orchestrated the mob assault must be identified and rooted out, Malangba said.
Any force which threatens Manipur's integrity and its unity will be treated as an enemy, and the COCOMI students front will take appropriate actions against such forces, Malangba said.
