Manipur shakes - An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale

Imphal, February 04, 2011:
An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale with its epicentre on the Manipur side of Indo-Myanmar border shook North eastern region including Manipur, creating panic, at around 7.24 pm today.
Following the tremor, power supply remained cut off for almost half an hour in Manipur.
People ran out of their homes as the quake lasted for about 10 seconds.
According to information received from Receiving Station, Seismological Division of Indian Meteorological Department, New Delhi, the intensify of the earthquake was moderate and the epicentre has been located 60 kms from Imphal at 24.8 degree North Latitude and 94.6 degree East Longitude.
According to report of US Geological Survey, the quake occurred below 55.2 miles from sea level.
Information received from Chandel said that some electric poles collapsed at the district headquarters.
However, Deputy Commissioner of Chandel has informed that there is no report of any damage.
Commissioner of Relief and Disaster Management Suhel Akhtar has informed that in the earthquake some door panes suffered damage in the office building of Manipur Secretariat.
Information received from Power Department said that on account of quake functioning of the power generator of Loktak project remained switch off for almost half an hour and the power supply stopped as the 132 KV line extending from Dimapur to Imphal became overload.
