Imphal, October 05 2026:
The National Register of Citizens (NRC) must be updated based on 1951 as the base-year, asserted Kanglei Meeyamgi Etinfam (KME) spokesperson Longjam Munindro at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal today.
The year 1951 must serve as the base-year.
Demand for adoption of any other year as the base-year other than 1951 is devoid of logic, he said.
Explaining, he said the first NRC exercise which identified citizens of the country was carried out in 1951.It defined "who are citizens" of India in the Constitution which was enforced on January 26, 1950 .
Any other proposal from different quarters for adoption of 1961 or 1971 as the base-year would only create division among the people, he added.
While taking up steps to update the NRC based on 1951 as the base-year, the Govt must also institute Foreigners Tribunals, he added.
