Imphal, October 05 2026:
The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has decided to suspend all forms of intensive agitation temporarily.
Speaking to media persons at Citizens' Club, Wangkhei Khunou-Soibam Leikai today, JFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba said that the house listing work of Census 2027 has been deferred following strong mass movements.
Moreover, the Manipur Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution to persuade the Government of India to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur before the census.

In spite of the State Assembly's resolution, JFD and the people have been demanding the State Government to exert pressure on the Government of India to start due process of updating the NRC with 1951 as the base year, empower the Manipur State Population Commission by appointing a full-fledged Chairman and adequate staff, enact a Manipur Population Policy and produce a white paper on updating the NRC, the JFD convenor said.
In response to these demands, Government spokesman Dr Sapam Ranjan told the media on October 3 that the State Government will ask the Centre to defer all census works completely in Manipur.
Dr Sapam Ranjan also told the media that the State Government has started working on empowering the Manipur State Population Commission and enacting a Manipur Population Policy.
The Government spokesman also said that the Government has started preparing a white paper on updating the NRC, according to Jeetendra Ningomba.
In view of these steps initiated by the State Government, the JFD and JFD Task Force consulted people and decided to suspend all intensive forms of agitation temporarily.
However, the ongoing MLAs' signature campaign, campaign meetings and sit-in-protests will go on, the JFD convenor said.
Nonetheless, JFD will keep a close watch on the State Government's activities.
If the Government's activities or initiatives are not satisfactory, the JFD will resume all sorts of strong mass movements any time, he added.
