Imphal, February 02 2026:
On the occasion of World Wetlands Day 2026, environmentalist and former Chairman of Loktak Development Authority (LDA) M Asnikumar Singh has reaffirmed the collective responsibility to protect and preserve wetlands and raised concerns over the long-term ecological impact of the Ithai Barrage associated with the Loktak Hydroelectric Project run by NHPC .
In a message, he highlighted the special significance of the day for Manipur as "Loktak lake, a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, is the cradle of our civilization, a source of livelihood for thousands, and the last natural habitat of the endangered Sangai, our State animal.
Loktak regulates water, supports rich biodiversity, sustains fisheries and agriculture, and nurtures the unique cultural traditions of the people living around it" .
Expressing deep concern over the Ithai Barrage, he warned that the decades-old intervention has seriously disturbed the Loktak lake's natural balance.
Calling for an honest re-examination of the impact of the barrage, he asserted that Manipur can live without the Loktak HE Project, but it cannot live without Loktak lake.
M Asnikumar also appealed to the community, particularly the youth, to take a proactive role in conserving wetlands for future generations.
In the face of broader global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasing human pressures, he noted that protecting Loktak and other wetlands of Manipur is no longer optional but an urgent necessity.
He emphasised that conservation efforts must go hand in hand with community participation, sustainable livelihoods, and responsible development.
Concluding his message, he urged people to commit to restoring, conserving, and celebrating Loktak and all wetlands that sustain life, culture, and resilience in Manipur and beyond.
