Imphal, December 18 2023:
The 16th Foundation Day celebration of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences reminded people of the time when a Japanese delegate gifted a wall clock to the organiser of an event here as a reminder to respect time.
Japanese people are known for their punctuality.
The Japanese delegate was attending an event, some years ago, in a hotel in Imphal when he gifted the wall clock to the organiser.
Manipur, however, has not learnt the lesson.
The 16th foundation day of the esteemed institute today kicked off about 2 hours late.
People including journalists who had been invited were waiting in the cold for Health Minister Dr Sapm Ranjan's arrival.
The programme which was scheduled to start at 2 pm started at around 4 pm at the auditorium hall of JNIMS Porompat, Imphal East.
The event celebrated JNIMS's 16 years of existence and Dental College's 7th foundation day.
JNIMS Director Professor L Deben, Dental College Principal Dr Nidarsh D Hegde, Medical Superintendent Professor Kh Lokeshwar, Additional Medical Superintendent Professor N Kameshor and Dean (Academics) Professor T Rajen, other Professors and doctors attended the event.
JNIMS Director L Deben said the hospital was registered on December 18, 2007 under the Manipur Register Society Act and it became a full fledged medical institution recognised by the Central Ministry of Health & Family Welfare on April 17, 2015 .
The JNIMS Society was dissolved on December 1 (2023) and the State health Department has absorbed the institution as a Government Medical College.
The MBBS intake seat of 100 has been increased to 250 as approved by the Central Ministry from the 2022-23 session, he said.
The Dental College of JNIMS was opened in 2017 with an intake capacity of 50 BDS seats.
JNIMS has 20 PG speciality courses, he said.
The Director said so far, JNIMS has produced 797 MBBS degree holders, 191 PG degree holders and 42 BDS degree holders.
The medical institutes are affiliated to Manipur University and at present, JNIMS has 699 MBBS students, 293 BDS students and 220 PG students, he added.
Stating that he wants the Government to regularise all contract staff including those engaged on daily wage basis, Deben urged the doctors, and all staff to cooperate and work together to lift JNIMS to new heights.
An annual report of JNIMS and a magazine were released and meritorious medical students were feted on the occasion.
