WOM distributes sewing machines to IDPs

Writers of Manipur (WOM) distributed sewing machines to displaced people who are taking refuge in different relief camps during a function held at Narasingh Mandop, Singjamei Makha Naorem Leikai on Tuesday.
Addressing the gathering, WOM member Ningthoujam Saratchandra said that the organisation has been carrying out donation drive with a fixed amount of Rs 7 per person from October 29 onwards.
So far, it has been able to collect Rs 1.5 lakh, with which WOM bought 10 sewing machines and distributed to 10 IDPs from different relief camps.
It had also distributed 10 sewing machines in the first phase earlier.
Beneficiaries were selected based on their prior skill in tailoring and on first come first serve basis since it cannot fulfill every demand.
Apart from the sewing machines, WOM is also providing fabrics and other materials.
Under the initiative, the beneficiaries will make winter clothes, which WOM will collect and provide wages to the beneficiaries, he said.
Retired district and sessions judge A Noutuheshwari, retired principal of Imphal College Laishram Randhoni and retired principal of Standard College Chongtham Subadani attended the programme as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
