Imphal, February 07 2025: Institute of Liver and Digestive Sciences (ILDS) hospital, Kwakeithel has reportedly conducted the first ever Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) procedure in the state.

Addressing media persons at the hospital s board room on Friday, ILDS managing director Dr N Surajkumar informed that a 45-year old woman, unable to eat or drink for about 1.5 year and the health condition undetectable at various hospitals, was finally diagnosed as suffering from Achalasia Cardia Type-II when brought to ILDS.

In a short period of time, all the blockages in her food pipe were removed using endoscopy through the POEM procedure, he explained.

With the successful conduct of the operation, the patient started consuming food from the very next day, the doctor informed, while adding that her diagnosis was made possible through the Oesophageal Manometry machine, which ILDS has installed for the first time in the northeast region.

Despite the difficulty of the operation, the procedure was successful due to the teamwork of the hospital, he added.
