Imphal, August 02 2025:
In a remarkable medical achievement, SKY Hospital has successfully treated a 28-year-old man from Ukhrul suffering from a rare congenital heart condition, which involves a large atrial septal aneurysm with multiple holes, without the need for open-heart surgery.
The patient, Chipermchui, son of Zechaira of Tushar village, Ukhrul, had been living with this serious heart defect since birth.
The condition caused abnormal blood flow (shunting) through multiple holes in his heart, leading to heart enlargement, symptoms of heart failure, breathlessness, chest pain and stunted physical growth.
Addressing media persons at the SKY Hospital conference hall in Lalambung on Saturday, chief cardiologist Dr L Shyamkumar said that a highly specialised diagnostic procedure called Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) was performed on June 26, confirming the feasibility of closing the heart holes using a device inserted through the groin, thus avoiding a major surgical procedure.
On July 31, 2025, he and his team successfully closed the multiple holes using a 36 mm closure device, guided through the venous system into the heart.
The procedure was performed under local anaesthesia and was declared a success.
Pre and post-procedure echocardiography videos demonstrated both the complexity of the defect and the effectiveness of the closure.
Dr Shyamkumar expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, saying, "This was a complex case, and we are extremely pleased that the device closure was successfill.
This proves that such advanced and minimally invasive procedures are being regularly performed at SKY Hospital" .
He also highlighted the importance of early and accurate diagnosis through techniques like TEE, which are available in Manipur at SKY Hospital.
He further urged the public not to delay seeking treatment and to be aware that world-class cardiac care is now available within the state.
