Imphal, November 07 2023:
While contending that multiform/inconsistent reservation system followed by different departments for admission process in Manipur University is poised to deny even eligible candidates enrolment, Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) has banned all admissions in the university with immediate effect.
In a statement, MUSU informed that the reservation policy followed in any state is based on the demographic structure contrary to which the reservation norms in Manipur defies existing demographic structures.
Due to inconsistency in the reservation policy of the university, eligible candidates are likely to regretfully miss the chance of pursuing higher studies in the university.
The union also expressed dissatisfaction over re-engagement of retired teachers of the university with such systems seriously curtailing the opportunity of qualified candidates getting into the teaching profession at the university level.
This has also contributed to increasing rate of unemployment in the state, said the statement appended by MUSU president and other office bearers.
It also pointed out that advertisement for recruitment of teachers in the Teacher Education and Life Sciences (Zoology and Botany) departments, which was published in 2017, has not been carried out till date.
Due to shortage of teachers in these departments, it has become impossible for the said departments to be fully functional.
Moreover, the union has received many complaints regarding inability of the teachers to teach the students properly.
In addition, many students who are desirous of taking up research work have been denied the opportunity due to the lack of teachers.
Considering the aforementioned issues, MUSU locked the three departments following which a meeting was held with heads of department, MU vice chancellor and registrar.
During the meeting, it was agreed that the recruitment of teachers in the said three departments will be done at the earliest.
However, to this day no positive actions have been taken up and it is feared that the recruitment process cannot be completed due to differences in trying to push in their choice of candidates for the said posts.
