Imphal, June 23 2025:
Although India is the fourth- largest economy in the world, there have been no significant changes in the rural economy.
Accordingly, various activities have been taken up at the grassroots level under the Ministry of Cooperation to improve the rural economy, stated Cooperation Department special secretary Somorjit Salam.
He made the statement at the distribution function of computers and related equipment to members of computerisation of Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), organised by Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Department of Cooperation at the Registrar Office, Lamphel on Monday.
Somorjit continued that as per the guidelines of the Ministry, all documents and records of PACS would be digitised to make it more convenient for cooperative societies to avail bank loans.
"To improve the living standards in rural areas, we need to improve the source of livelihoods for the rural population.
People need to take on the responsibility instead of relying solely on the government," he stressed.
In his speech, registrar W Ibohal informed that the Ministry has approved around 232 PACs for Manipur, with a total project cost of Rs 783.63 lakh.
Among the approved PACS, 190 have been computerised and the rest are in progress.
He mentioned that some of the responsibilities that can be undertaken by PACS include setting up a Common Service Centre, becoming LPG and fertiliser distributers, opening oil pumps and others, and urged the PACS to fulfil their responsibilities to ensure joint development.
During the programme, hardware equipment were distributed to around 45 PACS from Imphal West, Kakching, Tamenglong and Ukhrul districts.
