Churachandpur, July 26 2025:
The fragile life of two-year-old Thonggunsei, an internally displaced child living in the Sangai University Relief Centre, took a hopeful turn recently, thanks to the compassionate intervention of the Assam Rifles.
His story is one of heart-rending hardship born from the communal violence that swept through Manipur.
Thonggunsei's ordeal began when his family was forced to flee their home in Langching village, Sugnu area, amidst the escalating ethnic clashes in 2023 .
It was during this desperate flight that his mother, Nengzalam, suddenly died, leaving the infant in the sole care of his grandmother, Tinnieng.
Since then, they have endured severe hardships at the relief centre, with limited access to resources and medical care.
After nearly three years at the centre, Thonggunsei developed multiple serious health conditions with severe asthma, heart and chest complications.
Having refused food for several days, the child was recently admitted to Churachandpur District Hospital.
Despite her dire financial situation, Tinnieng clung to the hope that her grandson would recover.
She received only Rs 500 from caretakers for medical treatment, which was far from sufficient.
In a desperate plea for help, Tinnieng reached out to the Assam Rifles through Ng Sitlhou, also known as Boipu, a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the Indian Army.
Responding swiftly, the 36 Assam Rifles extended medical assistance to the child, providing essential medicines and nutritional support.
Meanwhile, the Assam Rifles conveyed in a press statement that their team remains committed to supporting displaced and vulnerable communities in Manipur, particularly during this time of turmoil and suffering.
When asked why she turned to the Assam Rifles, Tinnieng said: "We had nothing.
My grandson was born while fleeing from Sugnu to Churachandpur, and I lost my daughter along the way.
At the relief centre, the child fell ill and I had no means to care for him.
I was bewildered by his worsening condition, so I prayed and sought help" .
She expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Assam Rifles, the doctors, and nurses at the district hospital for their care and concern.
"I believe God answered my prayers through the kindness of the Assam Rifles and the love shown by the hospital staff," she said, with a fervent prayer that: "May God bless them abundantly" .
