Imphal, August 21 2025:
Yelhoumee Phurup secretary RK Bijayalakshmi has cautioned that outsiders are actively exploiting the divisions among the indigenous communities of the state.
Bijayalakshmi made the remark during a one-day workshop on Inter Cultural Resources and Peace building,' jointly organised by Government Hindi Teachers Training College (GHTTC) and the Council for Educational Administration and Management, Manipur Chapter, held at the former's multipurpose hall on Thursday.
Identifying misunderstanding as one of the causes of conflict, Bijayalakshmi stated that the workshop was organised with the objective of helping the indigenous communities identify and understand each other.
She maintained that the conflict raging for more than two years, is allowing outsiders to feast on the fissures among the state s communities.
To address this, the indigenous population need to stand together in all issues, which is also better for the future, she conveyed, while contending that spread of Hinduism in the state after the arrival of Shanti Das Gosai is the root of all misunderstandings.
"Even then, while religion could evolve over time, one's origin would always remain immutable.
Not knowing our origin "would amount to forgetting our ancestors," Bijayalakshmi asserted, while advocating for a return to ethnicity to avert future discord.
During the technical session, which was moderated by GHTTC principal Prof Th Asha Sinha, cultural activists and scholar Mutua Bahadur spoke on the topic 'Trans-cultural confluence and solidarities'; and Asia Centre, Harvard University's Binalakshmi Nepram on Indigenous Rights, International Protocol and Regional Issues' as resource persons.
