Thangal Surung, MEC Eco Club observe WED

For the first time, Thangal Surung village joined the rest of the world in observing World Environment Day on Friday with a tree plantation drive.
The plantation drive was preceded by a brief highlight on the importance of World Environment Day by village secretary Dr Chand Thangmi.
Around 600 saplings were planted in and around the village with 2,000 more saplings to be planted in the coming days, informed village headman K Gongrisim.
Due to large-scale deforestation, Thangal Surung faces shortage of water during the dry season, he said, adding that water available is also impure now due to the use of fertilisers, pesticides and chemicals for jungle clearance.

As such, the villagers decided to plant more trees, the village chief said, adding that they approached the Kangpokpi Forest Division for providing saplings.
Mount Everest College's (MEC) Eco Club in collaboration with Taphou Phyamai Youth & Students Organisation, Senapati also observed World Environment Day on the theme Ending Plastic Pollution' and conducted a cleanliness drive at the college ground and surrounding areas.
Students and volunteers participated in the cleanliness drive Collecting plastic waste and promoting sustainable practices.
The drive was conducted to raise awareness about environmental conservation and to encourage eco-friendly habits among the community, fostering a cleaner and greener future.
On the other hand, Sociology Department of Mount Everest College organised a tree plantation campaign at Taphou Kyishi, an adopted village of the department.
The event held under the theme 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0' was aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and community engagement.
A total of 80 trees of different varieties were planted during the campaign.
