Imphal, January 12 2024: Informing that AIIMS, Bhopal has several patented medical equipment and technologies in the healthcare sector, executive engineer of the institute professor Dr Ajai Singh said that the institute can offer the technologies to Manipur by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state government.

A team of state journalists, who are currently on a media tour to Madhya Pradesh jointly organised by PIB Imphal and PIB Bhopal under the aegis of ministry of information and broadcasting, visited AIIMS Bhopal, which is one of the premiere institutes of the country on the third day on Friday.

The journalist team had the opportunity to have firsthand experience of witnessing the advancement in healthcare technologies adopted by the institute including the patented instruments.

Officials of PIB Bhopal accompanied the state journalists.

During an interaction held at the conference hall of the institute, Dr Ajai Singh said that AIIMS Bhopal has several patented equipment and technologies in the field of healthcare.

The premier medical institute got copyright registration for six equipment and patent for one last year.

The 'Spring Load Mouth Opening Instrument' got patented in December last year.

The equipment, used in the treatment of Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), and Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis, was developed by the institute under the guidance of additional professor Dr Anshul Rai.

OSMF is a chronic disease that causes inflammation and progressive fibrosis of the submucosal tissues.

This leads to stiffness of the oral mucosa, trismus, and inability to eat.

TMJ ankylosis is defined as bony or fibrous adhesion of the anatomic joint components.

It can be a serious and the disabling condition can lead to difficulties in mastication, swallowing, speaking, esthetics and oral hygiene.

In both cases, patients undergo two years of physiotherapy after successful surgery and the instrument is used in the post-surgery treatment, he said.

As of now, the instrument is used only in AIIMS Bhopal, and any institute or hospital willing to use the instrument needs to sign an MoU with AIIMS Bhopal, he said and added that the institute will warmly welcome proposal from the Government of Manipur in this regard.

Once the MoU is signed, researchers from the state can visit AIIMS Bhopal and get hands on knowledge on the use and application of the instrument, he added.

Dr Ajai further informed that the idea of the instrument was Conceived about six years ago and patent was filed in 2019.Before getting the patent registration, the institute had already used the instrument on around 18 patients with successful outcome, he added.

On the other hand, the professor said, the institute had also filed another patent registration for its 'Sample Dryer' which could help in storing evidences of crimes without degradation.

Apart from providing free treatment under health schemes of both state and Central governments, the institute has also signed MoU with the Indian Army to provide the same to ex-servicemen.

Another MoU was also signed with Madhya Pradesh government for providing free treatment to cancer patients among the victims of Bhopal Gas Tragedy, he informed.

Dr Ajai further informed that the institute is providing medical treatment to patients not only from Madhya Pradesh but also from neighbouring states in different types of health conditions including neurosurgery, cancer therapy, trauma care, haemophilia, sickle cell anaemia, cancer management, pediatric gastro oncology, pediatric nephrology, and kidney transplant on children among others.

Moreover, the institute has also separate units for anti-tobacco therapy, transgender clinic, isolated exclusive adolescent unit among others with the objective to provide healthcare services to the people.

It has e-registration facility, which will help in providing hassle-free service to patients from other states.

Due to the high volume of patients, the institute cannot guarantee services in the absence of registration, he added.
