Imphal, May 07 2025:
Special commissioner (art and culture) M Joy on Tuesday expressed concern over the growing disconnect between children and elders, attributing it to the excessive use of mobile phones, which he said have replaced the folk tales storytelling tradition once cherished between grandparents and grandchildren.
Speaking as chief guest at the 63rd foundation day celebration of Shri Shri Bal Mukunda Dev Music College at Palace Compound, here, Joy noted that children and elders hardly spend time together nowadays.
Mobile phones have replaced folk tales usually told by grandparents, and this has lead to a decline in character, behaviour, and morality among the younger generation.
He lamented that children are missing valuable advice from elders, and in turn, elders are being deprived of joyful moments with their grandchildren, not a good sign, he warned.
Joy further noted that Manipur has made its mark in art and culture and is home to many artistes.
However, he pointed out that despite their popularity in youth, many artistes are left uncared for in old age, often neglected by their own children.
He appealed to the public to treat elders with care arid respect.
Describing music as an inseparable form of art, Joy encouraged students to pursue it passionately, highlighting its role in helping people navigate life's ups and downs.
Presided over by former principal L Devendrajit, the function was also attended by former senior lecturer M Kumar as guest of honour.
The programme included the release of a foundation day souvenir, followed by a musical concert.
