VC reflects on MU's progress; scribes awarded

Manipur University celebrated its 45th foundation day and observed World Environment Day on Thursday.
As part of the celebration, the Manipur University Media Awards 2024-25 were presented to Huieyen Lanpao sub-editor Bijoy Laishram and SKTV chief reporter Kshetrimayum Prem-chand Singh.
The awards carry cash prize and citation.
The programme was attended by MU vice chancellor Prof N Lokendra Singh as chief guest and School of Humanities & Environment Science dean Prof S Jibonkumar Singh as president, while School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences dean Prof Sumitra Phanjoubam, registrar Prof Th Binoy Singh and IQAC director Prof A Rajamani Singh were the guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, VC Lokendra reflected on significant changes in the University since its establishment.
He stressed the need for focussing on the changes brought on by technological advancements including AI and also on the surrounding environment in view of the social economic changes driven by urbanisation and modernisation.
Mentioning that around 120 colleges are affiliated to MU serving over 39,000 students, the VC also emphasised the need for enriching quality teaching and quality publication apart from taking up specific programmes.
In the context of Manipur, human rights issues are a major source of concern, he noted and highlighted the role of the varsity's Law Department at present and in the future.
Informing that MU is planning to introduce an MA course in Myanmar and China Studies in the South East Department from this academic year, he remarked that Myanmar is a global attraction.
He also stated that the University is interested in fishery, agriculture and agro-forests fields, in addition to e-markets.
There is a need to align the curriculum with other universities, maintained the vice chancellor, adding that MU would be aligning its syllabus with the national credit framework starting this year.
The University has already made a commitment in this regard to the central government, he confided.
