Imphal, June 28 2025:
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Manipur Pradesh president A Sharda has urged observers to assess the internal unity of BJP MLAs and workers through their actions, while assuring of reinstating a popular government in the state.
Speaking at a press conference held at the BJP office in Nityaipat Chuthek on Saturday, Sharda alleged that while the people want a popular government, what Congress wants is the dissolution of the Assembly and conduct of an election.
"The President's Rule was also imposed during the time of Congress government.
BJP government, however, understands the sentiments of the people and would try its best to bring a popular government, she assured, while urging representatives of all political parties to focus on the peace process instead and work in the interest of the people.
"BJP is united and the truth would slowly come to life.
Just like the saying 'slow and steady wins the race'," she remarked, urging all to wait and watch.
Refuting the allegations made my Congress against BJP over the Emergency imposed in 1975, Sharda argued that the main reason the then PM Indira Gandhi declared Emergency in 1975 was because Congress wanted to continue to hold on to power.
On June 12,1975, the court gave a verdict barring the then PM from contesting the election for six years.
In opposition to the verdict and to protect the hold on power, Emergency was declared on June 25 the same year.
Meanwhile, the Justice who barred Indira Gandhi from contesting the election was denied his routine promotion.
Sharda continued that Congress's claims that the 1975 Emergency was caused by BJP and RSS is baseless and showed the party (Congress) lack of knowledge of history.
Congress would do better to learn when BJP was founded.
Jan Sangh and RSS launched various movements in Gujarat and Bihar against the economic condition, political and social conditions of the time.
Many leaders at the time were arrested and put in jail.
BJP could never accept the desecration of democracy for the sake of family politics, and it had been the principle of the party that a leader must be someone who is ready to sacrifice for the people.
Sharda said that in 1975, a coalition government was formed and the Shah Commission was formed with regard to the declaration of Emergency.
The Commission's report stated that the declaration of Emergency was illegal.
During the emergency, around 250 media persons were arrested and jailed, one of whom was Hindustan Times correspondent Ng Jugeshwar from Manipur.
The detention of the journalists indicated that the then Congress Government denied freedom of press.
However, BJP has riot done anything to the media, who are trying to disseminate information to the masses, she added.
Stating that BJP was founded in 1980, Sharda said that the party had not done anything to cause chaos in the country.
As such, it is useless to charge BJP for the mistakes Congress has committed till date, she remarked.
