Imphal, July 08 2023:
Amid efforts being made to pump water from Imphal river to irrigate farmlands in four places in Kyamgei Mamang Leikai and Kyamgei Shantipur since Friday, the water levels of the river suddenly dropped after Imphal Barrage opened the shutters on Saturday, thereby causing massive panic amongst the farming community of the area.
In this regard, one farmer Sougrakpam Kanta of Kyamgei Mayai Leikai conveyed that the farmers are having difficulty in irri-gating the farmlands after the dam released the water, dashing all hopes of harvesting especially with the insecurity at farmlands near the foothills.
He continued that the government should take steps to prevent release of water from Imphal Barrage and take steps for cultivation/harvest of around 400 'pail' in Kyamgei Loukol.
He further appealed to the government to take up similar steps in Thiyam, Langdum and Koirou areas of Kyamgei constituency, while appreciating the local MLA and others for their efforts in pumping the water from Leishang Hiden to irrigate the fields in Kyamgei.
