MLA calls for focusing on economic activities

Stating that the government is prioritising resumption of economic activities with gradual improvement of the situation, Lamlai MLA Kh Ibomcha appealed to the public to start re-focusing on business and commercial activities.
Kh Ibomcha, who is also the chairman of Manipur Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd, gave the clarion call in his speech during the inaugural function of 7-day mini exhibition cum sales organised as part of the Crafts and Weavers Mahotsav' by Handicrafts Service Centre, Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, at Brahmapur Nahabam Dharmalaya hall, on Wednesday.
The mini exhibition cum sales has stalls run by inmates of relief camps where products made by them are put on sale.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Ibomcha acknowledged that all economic activities had been effected ever since outbreak of the ethnic violence in the state on May 3 last.
However, as the situation has seen improvement, the mini exhibition cum sales is being organised to resume economic activities and provide a market space for the products made by the artisans.
With steady return of peace, the government has started its economic activities and it is also time for the public to re-focus on business and commercial activities, he said.
Pointing out that next to agriculture, handloom and handicrafts contribute extensively to the overall development of the state's economy, Ibomcha said that the products made by the artisans are in huge demand outside the state and the chief minister is according top priority in this sector.
The finished products are being procured by the Corporation.
Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) senior assistant director (H) M Sanjeev Kumar, who was also present at the event as guest of honour, said that Manipur has been able to make a mark in the field of handicrafts.
The state's artisans are making handicrafts products available not only to the people of Manipur but also catering to the demands from other states and contributing to the economy of Manipur to a certain level.
There are also many artisans who have received awards from the central government.
Presided over by ex-Municipal Commissioner GA Ravichandra Sharma, the function was also attended by Padmashree Awardee Konsam Ibomcha as one of the guests of honour.
