Kangpokpi, January 03 2024:
As the 24-hour shutdown imposed by Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills is currently in effect along National Highway-2, particularly in all Kuki-Zo dominated certain areas: the Committee has appealed to union home minister Amit Shah concerning specific security forces in Moreh, such as removal of 'Meetei' police forces, insurgent groups, and reconsideration of the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) in valley districts.
The 24-hour total shutdown imposed jointly by CoTU Sadar Hills and ITLF Churachandpur commenced Wednesday morning, protesting against alleged atrocities by state forces.
Volunteers were seen obstructing the Imphal-Dimapur road using boulders and debris.
Traffic along the highway also has been stopped at Kangpokpi town, enforced by volunteers and regular commuters.
Businesses in Kangpokpi town remained closed, resulting in minimal vehicular movement along NH-2, with no reported incidents of disruption or violence.
The two Kuki-Zo bodies requested the central government's intervention to address their security concerns, emphasising the impact of certain forces on settlements in Moreh.
They expressed concern about peace as long as these forces remain, holding the government responsible for any security issues.
CoTU Information & Publicity secretary Thangtinlen Haokip alleged atrocities by state forces against three innocent civilians in Moreh, and urged for immediate removal of state forces from the region.
He further appealed to the union home minister to withdraw these armed personnel and cautioned about potential escalations if the demands were not met.
CoTU also condemned the dismantling of certain properties at Purum-Gangpijang Hill range of the Saikul sub-division in Kangpokpi district on December 30 last, considering such actions a threat to safety and security.
"Any further attempt to dismantle the bunkers will not be tolerated," he added.
CoTU then urged for the reinstatement of AFSPA in the valley district to address the situation effectively.
