Imphal, June 23 2025:
Khurai MLA L Susindro on Monday handed over two newly constructed houses to families whose homes were swept away in the recent flood, and announced that he will file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the forest department, seeking compensation for the flood victims.
Speaking at the handover programme, Susindro blamed the inability of the forest department to prevent widespread deforestation in the hills and illegal poppy plantations resulting in reduced water retention capacity of the soil, leading to floods in the valley.
He further alleged that the forest department prevented the acquisition of earth from certain areas which could have been used to counter the flood, thereby delaying timely intervention.
Stating that the real authority responsible for compensation should be the forest department and not the disaster management authority, the MLA said he will move the court in public interest.
The MLA said that he had already raised the matter with the Governor and warned of a possible flood in October, urging for timely reinforcement of river banks.
However, no response has been received so far, he added.
A total of eight houses were swept away by the flood in Khurai Heikrumakhong area.
Out of these, two have been reconstructed and handed over to the affected families, while four are nearing completion.
Construction of two houses was delayed due to a land dispute, which has now been resolved and work is set to begin.
Some extension works are still pending and will be completed soon, the MLA said.
He also assured provision of other essential commodities required for the households.
