Speaking on the occasion, Dr Shakti explained how Brucellosis and Leptospirosis is spread from animals to humans, adding that Leptospirosis is spread on contact with contaminated urine of infected animals like rodents, dogs, etc., especially after occurrences of flood.
"Its symptoms include fever, headache, chills, diarrhoea, etc., which are often mistaken for flu and ignored by patients.
If the patient shows additional symptoms like jaundice, the best option is to get tested and avail timely treatment," she stressed.
Regarding preventive measures, Dr Shakti urged all those working with animals to wear protective clothing and get the animals tested, while advising people to avoid flood waters as the contamination risks are high.
She also emphasised for clinicians to consider testing for leptospirosis when examining blood samples for fever symptoms.
In her speech, Dr Ranjana highlighted the need for the departments to work together to resolve or control any such potential risks to both humans and animals, so as to ensure a better and safer future for the future generations.
As part of the training programme, discussions were held with the veterinary officers for diagnosis and testing of Brucellosis and Leptospirosis.
