Imphal, March 27 2025:
A one day media sensitization workshop on 'My Waste, My Responsibility' was held today at the Committee Room of Manipur University (MU).
The workshop was jointly organised by the College Development Council, MU and MAHUD Department.
Addressing the function as chief guest, Prof Naorem Lokendra, MU Vice Chancellor, stated that India's sanitation conditions have improved significantly under the Swachh Bharat Mission in a short period.
Saying that open defecation was widespread before the implementation of Swachh Bharat campaign, he added that India has gained global recognition for controlling this unhygienic practice now.
In Manipur, various Central schemes have been implemented to promote cleanliness and hygiene, Lokendra said.
The Vice Chancellor noted that Manipur was once known for its cleanliness, but recent socio-political changes have led to a decline.
To address this, he suggested incorporating hygiene and lifestyle education into the academic curriculum.
President of the function Ngangom Uttam Singh, Director of IPR and MAHUD, emphasised more on solid waste management.
Stressing the importance of solid waste management, he said that a collaborative effort is needed to reduce the high costs associated with solid waste management.
He also acknowledged the challenges in maintaining cleanliness in the State's 25 towns and emphasized the need for collective responsibility.
Uttam noted that installing dust bins can actually spread garbage around.
Instead, he encouraged every household to segregate their waste, which would be a major step towards achieving the mission's goal.
He encouraged the public to adopt the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" ideology to minimize waste and promote sustainability.
Dr T Brajakumar, Director of Environment and Climate Change, was the guest of honour of the function.
The workshop was also attended by scholars, faculties, students of Manipur University as well as media persons.
The programme concluded with an interaction between the media personnel and experts.
