Imphal, May 25 2026:
The Occupancy Observation Committee today observed the 1st Protectorate Day at Rupmahal Theatre, BT Road.
Speaking on the occasion, Committee advisor and National Media Confederation, New Delhi convenor LM Sanna said Manipur was not a British colony but was kept as a protectorate.
He noted that after the British conquest on April 27, 1891, the throne and local customs were retained.
Sanna recalled that on May 25,1891, Maharaj Chandrakirti wrote to the Viceroy seeking clarity on how the British viewed Manipur.
The Viceroy replied that Manipur was not under direct British rule but was only being protected.
He added that the Anglo-Manipuri Treaty of 1762, the Treaty of Yandabo 1826, and the Treaty of Jiri 1833 clearly recognised Manipur as a sovereign State.
Councillor, Lilong Municipal Council Ajmal Nisa Begum; former Principal of DM College of Science, Dr A Kananbala Devi; and Dr Bogimayum Boynao of Yashdeep Piles Hospital, Maharashtra were among those present on the dais.
