Imphal, July 21 2025:
Arambai Tenggol (AT) GHQ has raised serious concerns over the increasing influx of illegal immigrants into the state, warning that the state's demographic balance, democratic integrity, and national security are under direct threat.
In a press statement, the socio-cultural organisation called on the Government of India to immediately address the crisis endangering the indigenous population of the state.
It cautioned that while Manipur - one of the seven sister states in Northeast India - is known for its rich culture, natural beauty, and ethnic diversity, this distinctiveness is now at risk due to unchecked migration from neighbouring countries such as Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Arambai Tenggol said that the continuous inflow of undocumented individuals has led to a decline in democratic representation of native communities, with their voices 'diluted' in the electoral process.
"The native population is being outnumbered by these unchecked illegal immigrants, the statement said, warning that the state's resources are being stretched beyond capacity.
The organisation noted that the resulting strain on infrastructure, rise in unemployment among locals, and disruption of cultural and societal balance pose long-term threats to the region.
Highlighting the security implications, AT pointed to the porous international borders that Manipur shares with Myanmar and Bangladesh.
The statement said that such weak border control allows anti-social and terrorist elements to infiltrate the state with ease.
"The lack of proper documentation and identification makes it easier for them to carry out criminal activities without being traced," it asserted.
AT also expressed deep concern over the demographic and geopolitical shifts caused by the influx.
Alerting that the rise in the number of illegal immigrants has significantly changed population dynamics, further marginalising indigenous people in their own land, AT argued that this has caused fear among locals about losing their identity and cultural heritage.
Putting forth a solution for the issues, AT strongly advocated immediate implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur.
"NRC would serve as a transparent and fair mechanism to detect illegal immigrants and facilitate their deportation.
This is the need of the hour," it stressed, adding that without the NRC, conducting any form of census would result in flawed data and deepen the crisis.
The organisation also cautioned that any census undertaken without first resolving the issue of illegal immigration would not only disrupt the state's electoral and demographic integrity but could also pose a serious challenge to national security.
Calling for collective responsibility, Arambai Tenggol urged both the government and the people of Manipur to stand united in safeguarding the sovereignty of the nation and the rights of the indigenous population.
"Let us join hands and work towards safeguarding our nation's sovereignty and our indigenous peoples' rights," AT pleaded.
