Institutions, NGOs observe World Environment Day

Various organisations and institutions observed World Environment Day 2025 under the global theme 'Beat Plastic Pollution' on Thursday.
Biodiversity, Ecology and Environment Network Manipur (BeeNet Manipur) observed the Day at Angan Ching Eco-Park, Kakching, focusing on this year's theme 'Beat Plastic Pollution' and to affirm the decision of taking up activities to lead the people of the state live in a plastic pollution free environment, informed BeeNet Manipur.
An observance function organised by Manipur University Department of Biochemistry featured School of Life Sciences dean professor Deba-nanda Singh Ningthoujam releasing the inaugural issue of 'BioPathways', a quarterly newsletter, which aims to disseminate the recent advances in biological sciences especially biochemistry among the interested students, teachers and scholars of biological sciences.

The newsletter would cover inspiring stories of unsung pioneers, premier scientific institutions, book reviews, ground-breaking biochemical discoveries and other articles of topical interest.
Similarly, as part of the Swachhta Action Plan (SAP) 2025-26, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal observed World Environment Day at the Jubilee Hall, under the global theme.
In a release, RIMS PRO informed that the event was aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and raise awareness among students and healthcare professionals about the importance of reducing plastic waste.
The programme was attended by RIMS Hospital medical superintendent professor N Sanjib Singh as chief guest and SAP 2025-26/Kayakalp nodal officer professor Y Govindaraj Singh as president while Manipur Pollution Control Board member secretary W Roshan Singh was guest of honour.
As a part of the observance, saplings were planted at the northern and western sides of RIMS A-Block, and meditation and yoga session conducted, while Plastic Footprint Calculator Booths were set up to help students assess their individual plastic consumption.
Jodha Heikrujam, human rights and environmental activist, delivered lecture on 'How Individual Habits Contribute to Global Plastic Waste and Pollution', while RIMS Hospital nursing officer Mutum Monika Chanu shared practical insights on 'Public Roles in Reducing Single-Use Plastic Items in Hospital Premises' .

The 52nd World Environment Day 2025 observance was also organised by United College, Chandel Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Eco Club at its Science Seminar Hall.
As per a release, an initiative to clean the College campus, along with a tree plantation programme, was conducted under the leadership of principal Dr Solomon Nungchim with participation of representatives of Students for Development (SFD), Thoubal, and students, faculty and staff members of the College.
World Environment Day was also observed by Manipur Innovation Society, Mayang Imphal; Jiribam Higher Secondary School; Mt Gibeon Higher Secondary School, Tadubi, Senapati; The Institute of Engineers (India) Manipur State Centre at Government Polytechnic Campus, Takyel; and at Thanga Karang boat parking.
Manipur Technology Innovation Hub (MTI-HUB) observed World Environment Day 2025 at IT Park, Mantripukhri, with the theme 'Adopt a Tree Campaign - Dig In & Make a Difference: Join the Tree Drive', in collaboration with Cyber Corporation Manipur Limited (CCML) and Dhanamanjuri University DM College of Science Department of Botany as the knowledge partner.
The observance was participated by around 80 individuals, including startup founders, students, faculty members and officials of CCML, as well as MTI-HUB team members.
Over 100 saplings of native and environment-friendly tree species were planted around the IT Park campus while the participants pledged to care of the saplings planted.
Meanwhile, the 14th edition of month-long environmental awareness campaign titled 'Mahousa Ningshing Tha' organised by Royal Riders Manipur in connection with the World Environment Day observance concluded on Friday.
Royal Riders Manipur has been organising the campaign every year with the main objective of preserving nature.
The valedictory function was held Friday at Royal Riders Manipur office at Meitei Langol in the presence of its president RK Tombisana, Wildlife and Habitats Soeiety Foundation founder M Loya and Imphal Free Press editor Irengbam Arun.
Prizes for the spot painting competition conducted as part of the campaign were also distributed to the winners at the function.
