IPR minister calls for strengthening media

Health & IPR minister Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh stressed the importance of strengthening media to enlighten the public.
Speaking as chief guest on the occasion of launching The Manipur News (A Manipuri Daily) held at Hotel Imphal, North AOC on Wednesday, Dr Ranjan noted that there were sign of apprehensions in the media houses when social media started to gain popularity.
"But there is still charm for reading newspaper.
The habit of reading newspaper in the first morning still exists even if there is a new option of social media platform," he opined.
The minister also maintained that, proper verification of news reports and other incidents occurred, are required before inclusion as news items.
Media plays a crucial role to enlighten the public in many spheres.
It also plays communicative role amongst communities.
Information and opinion about any happening in the state is also narrated though the media, Dr Ranjan maintained.
Speaking as functional president, Editors' Guild Manipur president Khogendra Khomdram expressed that as the profession of media is challenging one needs to take a long journey to achieve a feat in the line of professional journalism.
One should not forget their mentors and past experiences, he added.
In his address, All Manipur Working Journalists' Union president Bijoy Kakchingtabam said that there is a perception of threat to the freedom of press and media these days.
The launch programme was attended by The Manipur News editor T Chandragupta, senior journalists, and representatives of media houses among others.
