Environment Day observed across state, award distributed

As observed across the globe, the World Environment Day was commemorated by various organisations in different parts of the state under the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution" on Thursday.
In connection with the World Environment Day observance, Sa-hitya Thoupang Lup presented the Ningombam Pheiraba Award 2025 to environmentalist Dr Khangemba Shamungou.
The award carries cash prize of Rs 20,000 along with citation and shawl.
Speaking as chief guest of the function held at Manipur Press Club on Thursday, retired IFS officer Mahendra Pratap highlighted that Manipur is a land rich in diverse flora and fauna.

He noted that the Sangai, the rare and endangered brow-antlered deer found only in Keibul Lamjao National Park, is a symbol that connects Manipur to the outside world.
He pointed out that a large part of the state comprises hilly terrain, and the rampant deforestation in these areas has led to serious environmental consequences.
Such actions by a few individuals are impacting the entire population, he noted, and cautioned that if this trend continues, the state is likely to face even more critical situations in the future.
Presided over by Travellers Forum Manipur chairman RK Bud-himanta, the function also had Sahitya Thoupang Lup advisor Saratchand Thiyam delivering the keynote address.
The faculty members and students of Royal Academy of Law, Oinam also observed World Environment Day at the college complex in Bishnupur.
The faculty members and teachers conducted a tree plantation programme and cleanliness drive inside the college campus under the leadership of principal Eliza Maisnam and NSS programme officer cum assistant professor Chongtham Shaibalani.
Wakhal Manaba Apunba (WAMA), Kangleipak also observed the day at Sekta in Imphal East in collaboration with the Social Sporting Club, Sekta.
Saplings of fruit-bearing trees such as amla, guava and yongchak were planted at Laphu Pokpi Chingdai Khellamba.
In another event, World Environment Day was jointly observed by Meiteileima VLFD, Development Youth Association (DYA) Elangkhangpokpi, and the PRIs of Waikhong Gram Panchayat at Elangkhangpokpi.
During the programme, members and representatives of self-help groups, ward members and local club volunteers planted around 200 trees of various species in Elangkhangpokpi area.
Central Bureau of Communications (CBC), Regional Office, Imphal, commemorated World Environment Day 2025 at its auditorium, focusing on the global theme 'Putting an End to Plastic Pollution'.
Speaking on the occasion, CBC, Imphal director Engam Pame described nature as humanity's greatest teacher.
He urged everyone to change their behaviour toward plastic and non biodegradable products.
The event featured a theme-based song performance by CBC staff artistes, reinforcing the message of environmental stewardship.
A tree plantation drive was also conducted in and around the office premises.

SENAPATI: Mao Students' Union (MSU) on Thursday observed World Environment Day, 2025 at Chiisaru multipurpose hall under the global theme "Ending global plastic pollution".
Around 1,500 tree saplings were planted along the stretch from Tadubi to Maopungdong, with active participation of local youth and students.
MSU president Pfokrehrii Matekho highlighted the importance of collective action in protecting the environment.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from the Tadubi Youth and Students' Organisation, Chakremei Students' Union, Abo-Rikee Students' Union, Maopungdong Students' Union and Esiiphi Education Centre.
UKHRUL: World Environment Day observance under the theme "Ending Plastic Pollution Globally", in Ukhrul district was marked by launch of the EK PED MAA KE NAAM-2.0 (Plant 4 Mother 2.0) campaign to promote tree planting.
During the launch, speakers highlighted the government's commitment to environmental sustainability, urging the community to plant and nurture trees and to use plastic responsibly to create a greener planet.
Tree seedlings were planted at the mini-secretariat and various locations throughout the district.
They also announced that the campaign aims to plant 15,750 saplings, with participation from 225 schools in the district until its conclusion in September.
The event was attended by various officials, including CEO David Kashungnao, along with staff and students from local schools.
KAMJONG: Kamjong district also observed the World Environment Day under the theme 'Beat Plastic Pollution'.
Civil society organisations, student unions and others planted around 300 saplings at the Mini Secretariat, Kamjong and various other locations within the district on the occasion.
As part of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0' initiative, plantation drive was initiated in 15 schools, where 1,500 saplings were planted on school campuses, involving many students and teachers.
